Wallburg Kahle

The Wallburg Kahle stands on a 479.6-metre hilltop east of Meggen, overlooking the narrow Lenne valley. It rises 209 metres above the village and is reached by two marked paths: one climbs from Meggen’s Vogelstange ridge, the other from the SGV hut in Faulebutter. Both routes meet at a saddle 462 metres high before the final short ascent to the summit. The site is a small Iron-Age hillfort of type D, surrounded by earthen ramparts up to two metres high and ditches. Three terraces run across the spur, the longest 230 metres, with traces of a fourth barely visible. Steep slopes on the west and north once formed natural defences, though Kyrill’s storm flattened parts of the walls. Inside, two wartime slit trenches cut into the turf show later use. Visitors find a quiet wooded crest with wide views over the Lenne valley and the Kuhhelle massif. The ramparts curve across the hilltop, their lines softened by grass and bracken. Scattered blocks of iron-rich ore hint at ancient smelting, while the stone piles mark old diggings. The air is still, broken only by the sound of wind in the beeches and the distant rush of the river below.
