St Mary's Church

St Mary’s Church stands in the village of Lastingham, North Yorkshire, six kilometres west of Pickering. The present building dates from the late 11th century and occupies a site once chosen for its quiet fold of the North York Moors. A monastery was founded here in 654 by monks led by Cedd, who became the first abbot. After Danish raids destroyed the early wooden church, Benedictine monks rebuilt in stone in 1078 under William the Conqueror’s permission. The church later passed into Anglican hands during the Reformation and is now a Grade I listed building. The church is worth the journey for its rare crypt, described by Nikolaus Pevsner as unforgettable and by John Betjeman as one of England’s most moving places. Simon Jenkins awards it four stars in his guide, praising the crypt’s Norman walls, four pre-Conquest pillars and single piscina shaft. The crypt is thought to be the oldest Norman example in the world, with no major changes since William the Conqueror’s time. Its thick walls and full nave, aisles and apsidal chancel make it architecturally unique in England. The building also marks a clear start and end date for its Romanesque construction, a rarity in English churches. Inside, visitors find a mix of Perpendicular aisles and Norman nave and crypt. The tower was added in the 14th century and largely left untouched until John Loughborough Pearson restored the roof and rebuilt the porch in 1879. Stone altars reused from Roman times stand within the church, while the crypt below is reached by a staircase from the nave. The church serves a benefice of five parishes across Ryedale, though it holds few furnishings or monuments. Its power lies in the silence of the crypt and the weight of centuries that meet every visitor.
