Gerhart-Hauptmann-Museum

The Gerhart Hauptmann Museum stands on the island of Hiddensee in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen. It occupies the house called Seedorn in the village of Kloster, where the writer spent his summers from 1930 until 1943. The building remains much as he left it, with rooms arranged to show how he lived and worked. The museum forms part of a wider network of memorial sites across Germany dedicated to Hauptmann’s life and legacy. The house became a memorial in 1956, ten years after the author’s death. It is one of the few surviving original homes of a major German writer, preserving his study, bedrooms, terrace and wine cellar. Two small display cases focus on his life and work. Nearby, on the island’s small cemetery, lies Hauptmann’s grave, brought here by special train and ship after his death in 1946. Visitors enter through a modern pavilion that houses a shop before reaching the older part of the villa. The ground floor opens into a living hall where the couple took breakfast, with the kitchen kept out of sight. A decorated cloister built in 1930 connects the two sections of the house. Hauptmann walked here while dictating to his secretary. The study, wine cellar and upstairs bedrooms can be viewed along a set route, while the terrace outside the study is reached from outside the building.
