Opernbrunnen

The Opernbrunnen stands in front of the Cologne Opera on Offenbachplatz, a circular mosaic fountain designed by local artist Jürgen Hans Grümmer. Made of reinforced concrete, it is enlivened by ceramic and glass mosaics, including pieces from Aristotle Onassis’s yacht and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. A tall central jet forms the heart of the design, surrounded by rings of water sprayed outward. The fountain once shone brightly but fell into neglect for years. After citizen-led fundraising and restoration, fourteen new LED underwater lights now illuminate its colours in the evenings. A new chamber with a water-softening system and automatic refill keeps the basin flowing from April to October. Despite recent thefts of bronze spray rings, the main jet continues to draw visitors as a lively city-centre meeting point. Visitors find a sculptural basin ringed by benches, where the interplay of light on water and mosaic creates changing reflections. The surrounding Offenbachplatz, part of the Riphahn ensemble, frames the opera house and terraces, offering a quiet spot close to the city’s cultural heart.
