Göschberg

The Göschberg is a 620-metre-high mountain in the Franconian Jura, its summit straddling the border between the Southern and Middle Franconian Alb. It lies between Seubersdorf to the east-south-east and Pirkach, a district of Deining, to the west. The mountain’s slopes are entirely wooded and have never been used for farming, giving the forest an ancient appearance first recorded on early maps. The dense woodland disguises a rugged landscape of wind-sculpted rock ridges, deep hollows and small valleys. These features include groups of limestone crags formed from sponge growths in the reef zones of the former Jurassic sea. In 1452 the mountain was still called Geßberg during a dispute over timber rights. At the summit stands a 128-metre-tall telecommunications tower built of reinforced concrete. It carries antennas for private radio and mobile networks, broadcasting on 94.0 MHz with a power of one kilowatt. The tower’s height and position make it visible across a wide stretch of countryside.
