Auferstehungskirche

The Auferstehungskirche stands in Rottenmann, a town in the Liezen district of Styria. It belongs to the Rottenmann/Oppenberg/Selzthal parish group within the Evangelical Superintendentur A. B. Steiermark. Both the church and the neighbouring vicarage are listed monuments, recognising their historical and architectural importance. The church’s origins lie in the 16th century when Rottenmann was home to an early Protestant congregation under Hans Hofmann von Grünbühel. After a long interval, the modern parish was founded in 1906 during the Los-von-Rom movement. The first plans for a new building were drawn up by Karl Schiefermair, and the young architect Otto Bartning contributed designs before going on to build the neighbouring Selzthal chapel. The completed vicarage still shows Bartning’s early modern style beneath its mansard roof. The present church was finally erected in 1957–58 to plans by Friedrich Rollwagen. Its broad barrel-vaulted interior is lit by a single large round-arched window containing a stained-glass figure of the risen Christ by Hans Preiß. The rough stone façade is left plain except for this window and a small bell-carrying bracket attached to one side. Outside, the Koloman-Wallisch-Straße setting keeps the building close to the everyday life of the town.
