Boulby Mine

Boulby Mine lies just south-east of the village of Boulby on the north-east coast of the North York Moors. It sits 4.3 kilometres east of Loftus and is run by Cleveland Potash Limited, a subsidiary of Israel Chemicals Ltd. The mine began as a potash operation in 1973 and now produces polyhalite, a multi-nutrient fertiliser marketed as Polysulphate. Rock salt is taken from the same seams and used to de-ice roads across the region. The ore horizon lies between 1.2 and 1.5 kilometres below ground, making the mine the second deepest in Europe. Its underground roads stretch for 1,000 kilometres beneath the North Sea. The mine’s depth has made it a centre for scientific research. At 1,100 metres below the surface sits the Boulby Underground Laboratory, where scientists study organisms that survive in salt-rich conditions. NASA has tested Mars rover prototypes here, and the European Space Agency sent astronaut Matthias Maurer for training in 2017. Experiments include searches for dark matter, studies of low-radiation environments, and geomicrobiology projects. The laboratory also screens materials for ultra-low background radiation, supporting experiments worldwide. Visitors cannot go underground, but the surface site offers views across the moors to the coast. The John Barton surface facility houses Palmer Lab and supports ongoing research programmes. Nearby, the former railway line still carries goods traffic from Teesport, where much of the mine’s output is exported. The landscape around Boulby remains quiet, with only the industrial buildings and winding roads marking the mine’s presence. It is a place where industry and science meet beneath the North Sea.
