Amthof, Feldkirchen

The Bamberger Amthof stands in Feldkirchen, a town in the Austrian province of Kärnten. Built originally in the 13th and 14th centuries as an administrative centre for Bamberg’s ministeriales, it has served different purposes over the centuries. Today it functions as a cultural and events venue for the local community. The Amthof’s history reflects Kärnten’s medieval transfer to church control. In the 15th century the Ungnad family fortified the site against Turkish raids, adding towers and walls that survive today. Later expansions by the Foregger family in the 17th and 18th centuries raised the northern wing and completed the enclosing structure. A late 19th-century rebuild gave the complex its present four-wing shape around an arcaded courtyard. Visitors find a restored Renaissance and Baroque ensemble of towers, curtain walls and vaulted arcades. Inside, the Amthofmuseum displays city history, folk culture and building archaeology alongside the municipal archive. The Kultur-Forum-Amthof organises exhibitions and concerts, while the district music school occupies part of the building.
