Moncreiffe Hill

Moncreiffe Hill rises as a long, wooded ridge just south of Perth in Perth and Kinross. The hill’s slopes are almost entirely covered in trees, though the summit area called Moredun Top stands clear. From there, wide views open over Perth and the River Tay. Drivers on the M90 motorway often spot the ridge as they approach the city. Unlike most Scottish hills, the paths to the top stay under tree cover until the final stretch. The hill holds a quiet significance in local history. In 1565, timber from Moncreiffe was cut to mount cannons for Mary, Queen of Scots. Today the Woodland Trust Scotland manages the site and maintains marked trails. Information boards along the routes explain the trees and other plants found here. Two main starting points lead to the summit: a northern car park near grid reference NO138209 and a longer southern route from NO153192, which is signposted from the nearest road. Visitors find shaded paths winding through mixed woodland before reaching the open summit. The Woodland Trust has placed signs to help walkers follow the trails without getting lost. At the top, clearings offer places to rest and enjoy the wide views. The contrast between the shaded lower slopes and the open summit makes the walk interesting. The site remains a peaceful spot for short woodland rambles or longer explorations of Perthshire’s green spaces.
