Hopetoun House

Hopetoun House stands near South Queensferry in West Lothian as a grand stately home owned by a preservation trust. The building began in 1699 under Sir William Bruce and was later enlarged by William Adam in the 1720s. Inside, visitors find portraits by Gainsborough and Rubens alongside furniture and manuscripts from the Hope family. The house marks key moments in Scottish history. King George IV left from here after his 1822 visit, and the Adam brothers completed its lavish interiors in the 18th century. The grounds include an 18th-century mound hiding remains of a 15th-century manor house, Abercorn Castle. Visitors walk through landscaped parks designed by William Adam, with views toward Inchgarvie island and North Berwick Law. The walled garden dates from the late 1700s, and the house has featured in films and television series.
