Weiherhof

The Weiherhof in Salzburg is a historic building with two main parts. One stands in Morzg on Biberngasse, the other in Parsch on Fürbergstraße. A third building with the same name lies near Schloss Anif along the Salzachtalstraße. The oldest part, the Schlössl ‘am unteren Weiher’, was built around 1530 by the Salzburg cathedral chapter. Later, in about 1600, the Chiemsee bishops traded it to the same chapter for the hunting lodge Guggenthal. The pond that once gave the place its name was filled in during the early 20th century. The building carries traces of its long history. On the west side of the former farmyard are two coats of arms belonging to Ägid Rem, Bishop of Chiemsee from 1520 to 1536. An inscription records that he restored the house from its foundations. In the early 19th century the site was turned into a farmhouse with living quarters and stables. The stables feature vaulted ceilings known as Bohemian caps, marble columns and marble feed troughs. Today the property remains privately owned and most of it serves as a home. The former large stable has been converted into an art gallery called Galerie Weiherhof. Exhibitions can be viewed during public opening hours. The surrounding area still shows the gentle slope of the old pond terrace, linking the past with the present.
