Schulschwesternkirche

The Schulschwesternkirche stands in Eggenberg, a district of Graz. It is a Roman Catholic church linked to a convent school run by the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception. The complex includes the mother house of the order, built from 1846 onward. The present church was designed by Josef Flohr and completed in 1897, replacing an earlier building finished in 1855. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Günther Domenig and Eilfried Huth redesigned the interior. The church follows a cross-shaped plan and adjoins the monastery and school on its east side. Gerhardt Moswitzer created the altar, tabernacle and lectern between 1969 and 1970, while Rudolf Szyszkowitz contributed a lenten cloth and a stained-glass window. Visitors enter a nave divided into three bays under a modern ceiling. The original statues of the Immaculate Conception and of Mary with Saint John survive from the 19th century. A 1972 organ by the Krenn brothers fills the space with thirty stops across three manuals and pedal. The church’s calm interior contrasts with the busy school outside, yet both share the same purpose of faith and learning.
