River Thurne

The River Thurne winds through the Norfolk Broads for just seven miles, rising near Martham Broad two miles from the coast. It flows southwest from West Somerton, passing under Potter Heigham’s medieval bridge before joining the River Bure. The river links Candle Dyke and Heigham Sound to Horsey Mere and Hickling Broad, both shallow waters managed as nature reserves. Navigation channels are clearly marked, though tides and currents add challenge near the bridge. Above the bridge, Candle Dyke leads to Hickling Broad, a National Nature Reserve, while Meadow Dyke connects to Horsey Mere, mostly a National Trust site. The river’s most famous landmark is Potter Heigham’s medieval bridge, built with two triangular arches in the fourteenth century and a central circular arch added later. The bridge’s narrow central arch restricts boats to less than two metres of headroom, making it the lowest on the Broads. Nearby, Martham Ferry has a floating swing bridge from the 1920s, replaced in 2011 but still operated by pumping water in and out of buoyancy tanks. Nine drainage mills line the banks, including Horsey Mill, restored by the Norfolk Windmills Trust, and Thurn Dyke windpump, now turning again after decades of work. Below Potter Heigham, Womack Water and Thurne Dyke offer quieter routes, with depths as shallow as one metre. The river passes between Martham Broad’s parts, a nature reserve owned by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, before reaching West Somerton staithes. Hickling Broad’s waters host moorings, while Horsey Mere sits within a National Trust reserve. The landscape blends waterways, farmland and windmills, each telling part of the river’s story.
