Friesach/Hirt airfield

The airfield at Friesach/Hirt sits on the Friesacher Feld plain in southern Austria, just south-east of the old town of Friesach and north of Micheldorf. It is surrounded by the Seetaler Alps on one side and the Gurktaler Alps on the other, giving it a wide horizon under high peaks. The grass runway runs for 707 m across the flat ground, used by several kinds of aircraft. Gliders, motor-gliders, ultralights, powered planes and helicopters all operate here, run by the Hirter Flugsportclub. Gliders climb after being towed by a tug plane, while visiting aircraft need permission from the club before landing. The club keeps the strip in good order for take-offs and landings throughout the year. Visitors find a quiet grass strip with no terminal buildings, only a small hangar and clubhouse. The surrounding fields stretch away to the alpine foothills, offering wide views on clear days. A few benches sit beside the runway, where spectators can watch the aircraft manoeuvre. The airfield feels remote yet close to the old market town of Friesach, where travellers can find meals and lodging.
