St. Anna am Zackel

St. Anna am Zackel is a small hamlet on the southern shore of Lake Wörth in Carinthia. It sits on a rise above the Reifnitz bay, part of Maria Wörth municipality. The name comes from the hill’s conical shape, once called Čachl. Only about fifty people live in the hamlet today. The parish church, dedicated to Saint Anne, was first recorded in 1385. Until 1962 it belonged to Keutschach parish before being transferred to Maria Wörth. By then the building was in poor condition and was carefully restored. Late-Gothic features remain: pointed two-light windows, buttresses, and a steep roof. Inside, restorers uncovered a 15th-century fresco of Saint Christopher on the north wall. The nave’s vault shows late-Gothic stone-cutters’ marks and the date 1639. An 18th-century Baroque altar stands at the centre, flanked by statues of Saints Anne, Mary, James and Mark. The altar table was made from parts of the old organ. The sacristy entrance has a late-Gothic moulded frame, and Baroque statues of Saints John and Sebastian stand on either side of the chancel arch.
