Rundfunksender Bremerhaven-Bürgerpark

The Sender Bremerhaven-Bürgerpark stands in Bremerhaven’s Bürgerpark as a relic of mid-20th-century broadcasting. Built early in the 1950s, it began life as a 131-metre steel-lattice mast insulated from the ground for medium-wave radio on 936 kHz. Later the same mast carried television and FM aerials, linking the region to modern signals. By the 1990s medium-wave transmissions had ended, and in 2001 the remaining FM and TV services moved to a new tower at Schiffdorf. Once the aerial network departed, crews dismantled the giant mast piece by piece. What remains is the empty plinth and a quiet clearing where the mast once dominated the skyline. The park itself, laid out in the 19th century, still shelters ponds, avenues of lime and chestnut, and the old broadcasting hut converted to other uses. Walkers pass the spot without noticing the technical history beneath the grass, yet the outline of the foundations can still be traced. The absence of the tower makes the open space feel larger, framing views across lawns and woodland glades. Visitors find a calm corner of the Bürgerpark where the scale of the mast is recalled only by older locals. Benches face the former site, and children play where engineers once adjusted wave angles. The park’s winding paths still lead past the same lime trees planted a century ago, their shade now falling on a piece of radio history that has quietly returned to earth.
