Wotton House

Wotton House stands in the rolling countryside of Buckinghamshire, a grand English Baroque mansion built between 1704 and 1714. It occupies a mound above a natural lake, with formal gardens designed by George London and Henry Wise. William Pitt the Elder and Capability Brown later reshaped the landscape, adding pleasure grounds with two lakes. A fire in 1820 destroyed the interior, prompting Richard Grenville to commission John Soane’s restoration. The house passed through generations of the Grenville family until 1889, when it was let to tenants including the Bonn family. Elaine Brunner saved the house from demolition in 1957, restoring Soane’s interiors with architect Donald Insall. The house is worth the journey for its architectural significance and layered history. John Soane’s redesign in the 19th century introduced a three-storey Tribune and a new staircase, though some features were later obscured. The grounds span 200 acres, featuring two lakes and a canal designed with Capability Brown’s influence. The South Pavilion, once a coach house, has been home to figures like Sir John Gielgud and now Tony Blair. The estate’s past includes visits from John Adams and Thomas Jefferson in 1786, who admired its elegance. Visitors find a house restored to Soane’s vision, with interiors marked by his inventive use of space. The grounds offer long walks past temples, bridges and statues arranged along a circular path. The formal parterre and double elm avenue lead down to the larger lake, while the smaller lake sits closer to the house. The walled garden, once restored by earlier owners, remains open to the public on certain days. The estate’s quiet charm reflects centuries of careful design and renewal.
