Pfarrkirche hl. Thomas

The parish church of Tux stands in the Lanersbach district of the village of Tux in the Tyrolean Alps. Built on a gentle rise, it is surrounded by a quiet cemetery enclosed with low stone walls. The church is dedicated to Saint Thomas and has been protected as a listed building for decades. The church’s history begins in 1465, when the first structure was raised. In 1686 Georg Sieberer led a full rebuilding that gave the church its present baroque form. The tower, however, remains from the original late-medieval church, its pointed spire renewed in 1756. The interior was enriched in the 18th century by Bandlwerk stucco and vivid frescoes by Johann Georg Grasmair and others. Inside, the four-bay nave leads to a single-bay choir ending in a five-sided apse. The high altar, dating from about 1740, carries a painting of Saint Thomas above an image of the Holy Family. Side altars and the pulpit display statues by Stefan Föger and works attributed to Grasmair. Late-19th-century Grisaille panels line the walls, depicting local saints in subtle grey tones. The late-medieval west gallery rests on carved pillars, completing the blend of gothic and baroque styles.
