Knorenschloss

The Knorenschloss was a small hilltop fort built around 1200 by the Lords of Regentsweiler. It stood 562 metres above sea level, just 950 metres north of Ludwigshafen church in Bodman-Ludwigshafen. The site covers about 200 square metres on a spur of the Gehrenberg ridge. Written records mention the family in 1220, but by the early 14th century the castle had been destroyed. Today nothing remains above ground of the former walls or towers. Its brief existence marks one of many short-lived medieval strongholds in the region. The Lords of Regentsweiler appear only once in local chronicles before vanishing from history. Archaeologists have found no traces of later rebuilding or reuse of the site. The earthworks have long since levelled out, leaving only a faint rise in the forest. Visitors walk a quiet forest path that passes the former location. The ridge offers wide views over the Bodensee and the Hegau hills. Wild orchids grow on the sunny slopes in spring. There are no signs or fences, just a sense of open space where the castle once stood. The nearest village, Ludwigshafen, has a small harbour on the lake below.
