Burg Rohreck

Burg Rohreck once stood on a narrow ridge above the Tiefenbach valley, 700 metres west of Rohracker in Stuttgart. Built between 1220 and 1270 by the lords of Bernhausen, it served as the family’s main home for a century. The branch called itself von Rohreck, and in 1286 Wolfram von Rohreck and his son of the same name appear in records. After the family died out, Johannes von Bernhausen sold the castle and village to Count Eberhard II of Württemberg in 1365. The new owners probably let the stronghold decay or pulled it down. By 1474 the place was already called a Burgstall, a site where only traces remained. In the 17th century parts of the walls still rose above ground. Johannes Oettinger’s 1624 land survey mentions old masonry and a visible grave. The site lies on the northern slope of the valley, offering a clear view over the surrounding hills. No standing ruins survive today, yet the ridge keeps the memory of the medieval fortress. Visitors walk a quiet woodland path up the hillside to the former castle grounds. The crest is grassed over, with a few low stone fragments marking where walls once stood. The outlook stretches across the Tiefenbach valley and the distant Stuttgart basin. The air is calm, broken only by birdsong and the occasional train on the valley floor. The spot shows how a once-powerful seat of local lords faded to a grassy mound within two centuries.
