Magdalen College
Magdalen College stands beside the River Cherwell in Oxford, its stone buildings grouped around five quads. Founded in 1458 by William of Waynflete, it succeeded an earlier hall on the same site. The college owns a deer park and Addison’s Walk along the riverbank. Its large square tower is a landmark, and every May morning the choir sings from its top at dawn. The college also manages the Oxford Science Park to the south. The college has played a notable part in national history. During the English Civil War it supported the Royalists, donating nearly 300 pounds of silver plate to the cause. Later, in the 1680s, King James II tried to impose a Catholic president, leading to the expulsion of fellows. After the Glorious Revolution their places were restored, and the event is still marked by an annual Restoration Dinner. Inside, visitors find St John’s Quad with its outdoor pulpit and old Grammar Hall. Beyond the quads lie the chapel, the president’s lodgings and the deer park. Addison’s Walk follows the Cherwell through meadows planted with fine trees. The tower offers views over the city and the river below.
