Elgin Museum

Elgin Museum sits on Elgin’s High Street in a stone building listed as Category A. The museum opened in 1843 and is run by The Moray Society. Its rooms hold fossils, geology, archaeology, ethnography, art and local history. The building was designed by Thomas Mackenzie in 1842. Later changes came from A. Marshall Mackenzie and Son in 1920. The museum’s fossil collection is recognised by Museums Galleries Scotland. In August 2021 a 375-million-year-old predator’s bones went on display. These bones were found three miles away. The museum is one of Scotland’s oldest independent museums. Its exhibits show the natural and human past of Moray. Visitors find a single-storey museum arranged in small rooms. The fossil gallery shows Devonian-era remains. Archaeology cases hold Pictish stones and Bronze-Age tools. Ethnography cases display objects from around the world. Local history rooms tell the story of Elgin and Moray through maps and photographs. The building’s quiet High Street setting keeps the focus on the displays.
