Wien Spittelau railway station

The Verkehrsstation Wien Spittelau stands in the 9th district of Vienna, Alsergrund, straddling the tracks of the Franz-Josefs-Bahn. It is a multi-level interchange linking regional trains, S-Bahn services, and two U-Bahn lines. The station sits parallel to the river, where the city’s old steam-powered Stadtbahn once ran. The site has been a transport hub since plans for a high-level station appeared in the 1890s. Two earlier stops were cancelled in 1897, but the modern station rose in 1995–96 when the U6 branch to Floridsdorf opened. Its striking main building replaced an old bridge link and now anchors a busy network bringing commuters from north-western Lower Austria into the city centre. Inside, lifts and escalators connect three levels. The U4 and the Franz-Josefs-Bahn share a ground-level island platform, while the U6 runs two storeys above on side platforms. A central concourse holds shops and quick bites, and exits lead to the Spittelauer Steg, the Guneschgasse Skywalk, and the Josef-Holaubek-Platz by the waste-to-energy plant. Trams D, 35A and 37A serve nearby streets, though their stops sit apart, so transfers require a short walk.
