Hethel Old Thorn

Hethel Old Thorn is a tiny nature reserve in Norfolk, south-west of Norwich. It covers just 0.025 hectares and is managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. The reserve contains a single ancient hawthorn tree. This tree may date back to the thirteenth century. In 1755 its girth was measured at 9 feet 1 inch. The tree’s size has shrunk over time, but it remains healthy. It is the smallest wildlife trust nature reserve in Britain. The site is protected because of its age and historical value. Visitors come to see this rare survivor from the Middle Ages. At the reserve there is little else but the tree and its surroundings. The area is quiet and simple, with no other attractions. A small path leads directly to the hawthorn. The setting is rural, with farmland nearby. The tree stands as a quiet reminder of the past.
