Heysham nuclear power stations

Heysham nuclear power stations stand on the Lancashire coast near Lancaster. Two separate plants, Heysham 1 and Heysham 2, operate side by side with their own reactors and control rooms. Both use advanced gas-cooled reactor technology, a design shared with other British stations. The site overlooks Morecambe Bay, where the Irish Sea meets the Lancashire shore. Heysham 1 began generating in the 1980s after a decade of construction. Heysham 2 followed in 1988, adding extra capacity to the grid. The stations hold records for long, uninterrupted runs. In 2016 Heysham 2’s Unit 8 ran for more than 940 days without stopping, beating a Canadian record from 1994. Heysham 1 has also been extended twice, most recently to March 2028, after inspections showed its graphite cores were still sound. The plants supply low-carbon electricity to millions of homes across the north-west. Their output totals more than a hundred terawatt-hours over their lifetimes. Safety systems and regular checks keep the reactors running safely. Inside each plant, large turbine halls house steam-driven generators. The reactor islands sit behind thick concrete walls, with gas circulators and boilers arranged in compact layouts. Outside, the landscape is flat coastal grassland, with distant views of the Lake District hills. Nearby, the fishing harbour of Heysham village adds a working contrast to the industrial site. Visitors can walk the shoreline paths and watch ships pass the cooling-water intake. The power stations themselves are not open to the public, but the coastal scenery and nearby heritage sites make the area worth visiting.
