Mayrwipfl

The Mayrwipfl is a mountain standing at 1725 metres in the eastern part of the Sengsengebirge range. Its summit juts southwards from the main ridge and drops steeply only on the eastern side, while the other slopes are moderately steep and covered either with forest or large stands of mountain pine. A short ridge leads northwards from the summit to the Brandleck. The only routes to the top are unmarked paths, one of which starts from the Mayralm and crosses the southern flank. In summer the peak sees little tourism, yet in winter it attracts skiers and snowshoe walkers. The name Mayrwipfl comes from the farmstead Mayr im Hof, first recorded in 1199, on whose land the Villa Sonnwend was built in 1907–08. The same Mayr farm gave its name to the Mayr-Alm and the Mayrwinkl district. A summit cross and a visitors’ book sit on the highest point. Visitors who reach the top find wide views across the Sengsengebirge and the surrounding Prealpine landscape. The unmarked trails demand sure-footedness and a map, especially when snow lies on the ground. In winter the mountain’s quiet slopes become a favoured route for ski tours and snowshoe hikes. The Villa Sonnwend, now a private house, stands below the southern flanks as a reminder of the area’s early 20th-century history.
