Museum Schnepfenthal

The Museum of the Salzmann School stands on the grounds of the Salzmann-Gymnasium in Schnepfenthal, a district of Waltershausen in Thuringia. It occupies a place on the right side of the main entrance to the school. The building itself is part of a larger educational site with deep roots in reform pedagogy. The museum was opened in 1959 to mark the 200th birthday of Johann Christoph Friedrich GutsMuths. It traces the school’s development from an aristocratic educational institution to a modern grammar school. Life and work of the founders, Christian Gotthilf Salzmann and GutsMuths, are highlighted as key contributions to modern pedagogy. The museum also presents biographies of notable alumni such as the geographer Carl Ritter. Nearby, the Turnerplatz, built by Salzmann and used by GutsMuths from 1785, is recognised as Germany’s first gymnasium and gymnastics ground. Visitors find a collection of historical teaching materials and documents that illustrate the school’s reformist tradition. The Turnerplatz, a short walk away, remains a protected monument and offers a glimpse into early physical education. The Zöglingsweg, a walking trail created with the town of Waltershausen, leads to several excursion points including Schloss Tenneberg, the Abschiedslinde, and the woodland cemetery. The museum’s displays were largely restored through thousands of volunteer hours and donations from former pupils.
