Wash House

J. M. Barrie’s Birthplace stands in Kirriemuir, a small town in Angus, Scotland. The house was built at the end of the 18th century as a typical two-storey weaver’s cottage, plastered with harl and roofed in slate. It was here that the creator of Peter Pan was born in 1860. Historic Environment Scotland lists the building in category B of its statutory list of protected properties. The site now belongs to the National Trust for Scotland and operates as a museum. The museum preserves the cramped living conditions Barrie knew as a child. Nine siblings shared the upstairs with their parents, while the ground floor housed the family’s weaving workshop. Behind the main house lies a wash house where, at the age of seven, Barrie staged his first play. The ensemble includes both 9 and 11 Brechin Road, the latter now part of the museum. Visitors can see Barrie’s desk, brought from London, where he wrote Peter Pan. Two Peter Pan statues and one of Tick Tock the crocodile stand in the garden. The garden also offers a quiet space to reflect on Barrie’s life and work. The museum displays documents from his youth and later career, tracing the path from Kirriemuir to literary fame. In 2024 about 1,900 people visited the site. The simple stone buildings and their modest interiors give a direct sense of the environment that shaped one of literature’s most imaginative minds.
