Statens Museum for Kunst

The Statens Museum for Kunst stands in central Copenhagen, its historicist building facing the city’s main shopping street. The museum holds Denmark’s national art collection, from fourteenth-century works to the present. Nearly nine thousand paintings and sculptures share space with more than two hundred and forty thousand works on paper and over two thousand plaster casts. The gallery’s European collection spans five centuries, with rooms devoted to Mantegna, Titian, Rubens and Rembrandt. Danish and Nordic art from 1750 to 1900 fills twenty-four galleries, showing Abildgaard, Eckersberg, Købke and Hammershøi. A separate section presents early French modernism, including Matisse and Picasso, donated by collector Johannes Rump in 1928. Inside, a glass-walled corridor links the old building to a 1990s extension, offering views over Østre Anlæg park. The Print Room displays drawings and prints from the royal collection, while the Royal Cast Collection shows plaster copies of antique and Renaissance statues. Talks, concerts and installations take place throughout the year.
