St Stephen's Church, Gateacre

St Stephen’s Church stands in the quiet suburb of Gateacre, on Belle Vale Road, surrounded by late-Victorian terraces and mature gardens. The building is an active Anglican parish church, one of three in the Gateacre Team ministry, and it holds Grade II listed status for its architectural importance. The church was designed by Cornelius Sherlock, a local architect, and built between 1872 and 1874 in a style meant to recall the 14th century. Its exterior is faced with rugged sandstone and topped with a slate roof, while a northwest tower rises above the entrance. The tower features paired lancet windows, a niche with a statue, and a spire with lucarnes near the top. Inside, the church impresses with five-bay arcades supported by round columns and a scissor-braced nave roof. The chancel roof is coffered, and stained glass fills the windows, including a west window by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris from 1883. The east window, dated 1880, is by Frederick Preedy, and the two-manual pipe organ has been maintained over the decades, though it now includes modern electronic components. The church’s plan includes a five-bay nave, north and south aisles, a south porch, and a chancel with vestries. Visitors find a calm interior lit by rose windows along the clerestory and cusped ogee-headed windows in the aisles. The west face of the tower shows paired lancets and a statue niche, while gargoyles project from the embattled parapet above. The organ, cleaned by Gray and Davison around 1900 and repaired again in 1939 by Rushworth and Dreaper, remains a focal point. The church’s setting, with its sandstone walls and slate roof, blends with the character of Gateacre, offering a place of quiet reflection and architectural interest.
