Burg Endingen

Burg Endingen, also called Ulinsburg, once stood on the Illisburg hill above what is now the Schlickkuchen residential area in Endingen. Endingen is a district of Balingen in the Zollernalbkreis of Baden-Württemberg. The lords of Endingen built the castle around 1250. It was a high medieval fortification designed to guard the surrounding valley. Today nothing remains of the stone walls or towers. Historians know the castle mainly from old land records and local chronicles. The 19th-century historian August Kübler mentioned it in his studies of Swabian castles. Günter Schmitt’s 2007 survey of castles in the Zollernalbkreis lists Burg Endingen among the vanished sites. Archaeologists have found traces of the foundations beneath later buildings. Visitors walk through quiet streets in the Schlickkuchen district. The Illisburg hill is now covered with houses and gardens. A small information board marks the spot where the castle once rose. From the hilltop there are views across the valley towards Balingen. The area feels peaceful, with no visible ruins to explore.
