Schloss Sinning

Schloss Sinning is a Baroque palace in the village of Sinning, about ten kilometres south-west of Neuburg on the Danube. It stands on the edge of an old peat bog where the remains of a medieval water castle once stood. The three-storey building was erected around 1660 by Franz Freiherr von Giese in the Renaissance style. Later, in the 18th century, Freiherr Wilhelm Adam von Weveld added a two-storey Baroque wing in the French style. The palace is still privately owned by the descendants of the von Weveld family. The palace contains a knights’ hall with Régence-style stucco work and a grand Baroque garden laid out when the building was first constructed. Above the main door hangs a richly decorated Baroque alliance coat of arms of the von Weveld and Biedenfeld families. In the 19th century the estate became an industrial farm with a brickyard, nursery and brewery under Johann Baptist Freiherr von Weveld. He also trained young farmers and became the largest employer in the surrounding area. Visitors can walk through the park where medieval markets are held. The palace hosts concerts and guided tours, giving a sense of its long history. The grounds still show traces of the original water castle beneath the later buildings. The combination of Baroque architecture and industrial heritage makes the site unusual. The family continues to organise events that bring the past to life for guests.
