Golden Roof

The Goldenes Dachl stands in Innsbruck’s Old Town, a late-medieval landmark built as a royal box for Emperor Maximilian I. Completed in 1500, its roof shines with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles, a gift for his marriage to Bianca Maria Sforza. The structure was commissioned from court builder Nikolaus Turing the Elder in 1493 and served as a viewing platform for festivals and tournaments below. Archduke Friedrich IV had constructed the building a century earlier as a residence for Tyrolean rulers. Today the Alpine Convention’s office occupies part of the building, alongside a museum and city archives. The oriel’s exterior is covered with sculpted reliefs and mural paintings added by Maximilian. On the first floor, eight coats of arms mark his territories, topped by frescoes showing knights with imperial and Tyrolean flags. The second floor carries eight more reliefs, including one of Maximilian between his two wives, Maria of Burgundy and Bianca Maria Sforza, and another with his jester and chancellor. Flanking panels depict Moorish dancers in Andalusian style, popular entertainment of the time. Inside the loggia, frescoes by Jörg Kölderer illustrate aristocratic life, though all decorations are replicas; the originals are in the Ferdinandeum museum. Visitors find the ornate balcony and its gilded roof dominating the square. The coats of arms and reliefs face outward, telling stories of power and marriage. Inside the loggia, painted scenes show courtly scenes from the 15th century. The building also contains modern offices for Alpine policy work and historical archives for Innsbruck. From the square below, the golden roof catches the light, marking the spot where emperors once watched the city’s celebrations.
