St Mary's Church, Roecliffe

St Mary’s Church stands in the quiet village of Roecliffe, North Yorkshire, a Grade II* listed building now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. Built in 1843 for Andrew Lawson of Aldborough Manor, the church was designed by York architect R H Sharp using stone from a Roman quarry on the estate and from Cotgrove. Its Romanesque Revival style is clear in the round arches, roll-moulded windows and barrel-vaulted roof of limestone and red tile. Five black-and-white marble steps, once part of York Minster, lead up to the shallow chancel. A single bell hangs in the west gable bellcote, and the south door is framed by paired columns under a round arch. The church is worth the journey for its carefully moved fittings and furniture. The octagonal Jacobean pulpit came from Holy Trinity Church in Hull, while the 15th-century vestry door with carved tracery was taken from York Minster. Pews dated 1619 line three walls in a college-chapel arrangement, and linenfold panelling covers the east wall. The vestry holds a fireplace with crude carvings of human faces and animals, and a frieze depicts biblical scenes including the Nativity and David and Goliath. Visitors find a single-cell interior with a three-bay nave and a compact chancel reached by five marble steps. The round-headed windows cast soft light on the early woodwork, and the barrel vault overhead gives the space a calm, uncluttered feel. Occasional services and concerts still take place despite the church’s redundant status. The surrounding village offers a peaceful setting, and the building’s clean lines and careful detailing speak quietly of its 19th-century origins.
