Dorset Museum & Art Gallery

Dorset Museum stands in the centre of Dorchester on High West Street. The building was put up in 1881 from Portland stone to a neo-Gothic design by G. R. Crickmay and Son. Its front shows a two-storey bay with seven transom windows and a trefoil panel bearing the Dorchester coat of arms. Inside, cast-iron columns support the Victorian Hall ceiling, and an oriel window looks out over the town. The museum’s rear garden contains John White’s old rectory, where he lived while securing the charter for Massachusetts. The museum was founded in 1846 by local people including the writer Thomas Hardy. It now holds about four million items, from dinosaur footprints to Roman mosaics and Hardy’s manuscripts. The Ancient Dorset Gallery displays Viking finds and a Roman glass bowl, while the William Barnes Gallery tells the story of Dorset’s dialect poet. In 2021 the museum reopened after a £16.4 million refurbishment that doubled the space for exhibits. TripAdvisor gave it a Certificate of Excellence for four years running. Visitors walk through the Victorian Hall into modern galleries arranged over two floors. The Hardy archive includes first editions, handwritten drafts and a reconstruction of his study. A children’s activity cart and audio guide help younger visitors explore the displays. Outside, the building shares its Grade II listing with nearby Shire Hall and churches, forming part of Dorchester’s historic core.
