The Museum der Stadt Miltenberg stands in the ‘Haus Miltenberg’, a Renaissance building with richly decorated oriels beside the Schnatterloch stream in the heart of Miltenberg. Awarded the Bavarian Museum Prize in 1999, it shares the town’s museum work with the nearby Burg Miltenberg. The two collections divide their themes so each site can focus on its strengths. Visitors find rooms that trace the house’s own story alongside Roman relics and medieval coins. A gallery shows views of Miltenberg by artists who lived there, while the ‘Glaubens Sache’ room gathers Judaica, Christian art and folk pieces. The ‘Vom Alltag’ section presents fishing, shipping and pottery, including a toy collection by Schildhauer. A highlight is the Torah gable from Germany’s oldest surviving synagogue, set beside a Roman parade shield boss and early-19th-century military band instruments. Outside, a mikveh in Löwengasse marks the former Jewish quarter, and a Roman potter’s kiln survives near the Würzburg Gate. The main building’s displays of furniture, trade tools and toys bring to life how citizens once earned their living. Together these rooms and outposts show how Miltenberg grew from Roman times through the Middle Ages into a lively early-modern town.
