Gamsfeld

The Gamsfeld is the highest peak in the Salzkammergut range, standing at 2,027 metres above sea level. It belongs to the Gamsfeld group, part of the Dachstein nappe, in the south-eastern Salzkammergut Mountains. The Hallstätter See lies about 11 kilometres to the south-east and the Wolfgangsee about 11 kilometres to the north-west. Rußbach am Paß Gschütt sits 3.5 kilometres south of the summit, while Strobl’s municipal boundary reaches within 100 metres of the top. The mountain draws walkers year-round for its wide, open summit with clear views of the Dachstein massif and the Gosaukamm. The shortest route climbs from a car park north of Rußbach via the Traunwandalm and the steep southern flank, taking roughly three hours. A longer but gentler option follows the Angerkaralm and its cirque before joining the main ridge. Both paths are well marked and can be linked together. A more demanding winter route starts from the same car park and passes the Neualm, the Grosse Brettkogel and the Haberfeld, with some sections protected by fixed ropes. Ski tourers often choose this line in the colder months. The summit’s open dome offers sweeping vistas in every season.
