St Luke's Church, Orrell

St Luke’s Church stands on Lodge Road in Orrell, a district of Wigan in Greater Manchester. It is an active Anglican parish church serving the local community. The building belongs to the deanery of Wigan, the archdeaconry of Warrington, and the diocese of Liverpool. Construction began in 1926 with the three west bays, but the rest was finished only in 1939. Plans for a southwest tower were abandoned before completion. The church was designed by Henry Paley of the Lancaster firm Austin and Paley. The church follows the Perpendicular style of architecture and features a polygonal apse at the east end. Inside, octagonal piers support the arcades, and a low wall beneath the chancel arch holds an integral pulpit. The architects also designed the sedilia and furnishings, including an octagonal font. The churchyard contains war graves of a soldier and three airmen from the Second World War. Visitors find a quiet place of worship with simple, dignified furnishings. The octagonal font and the pulpit built into the chancel arch stand out among the interior details. The churchyard offers a peaceful space with memorials to those lost in the war. The architecture reflects careful craftsmanship without unnecessary ornament.
