Theatre Royal Haymarket

The Theatre Royal Haymarket stands in Haymarket, City of Westminster. It opened in 1720 as the third public theatre in the West End, originally built by carpenter John Potter on the site of The King’s Head Inn. The building moved to its present location in 1821 after being redesigned by John Nash, who added the grand Corinthian portico that frames the street today. It holds Grade I listed status and seats 888 people beneath its historic ceiling. The freehold belongs to the Crown Estate, though the theatre itself operates independently. The Haymarket introduced the first scheduled matinée in 1873, a change that spread to theatres worldwide. Its managers have included notable figures such as John Baldwin Buckstone and Herbert Beerbohm Tree, while actors like John Liston made their London débuts on its stage. In the 18th century, the theatre became known for political satire, staging plays that mocked prime minister Robert Walpole and his policies. Henry Fielding’s anti-Walpolean burlesques, including The Dragon of Wantley, drew record crowds and long runs. Even a hoax billing the Bottle Conjuror led to a riot that gutted the building in 1749. Inside, the theatre retains Nash’s portico and classical proportions, with a tiered auditorium arranged around a central stage. The interior walls display portraits of past performers and managers who shaped its reputation. The auditorium’s red velvet and gilded detailing reflect the 19th-century redesign. Outside, the portico’s six Corinthian columns mark the theatre’s presence on Haymarket, closing the vista from Charles Street. The building’s history is visible in every detail, from the royal patent granted in 1766 to the surviving playbills pinned in the green room.
