Minster Church of Saint John the Evangelist, Preston

Preston Minster stands on Church Street in the centre of Preston, Lancashire. It is the parish church of the town and an active Anglican place of worship. The building is Grade II* listed and has been recognised for its national heritage value. The church is dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist and has served the community for centuries. Its tower and spire rise above the surrounding streets, marking it as a local landmark. The church’s history reaches back to an ancient Christian site first dedicated to Saint Wilfrid. Documentary records begin in 1094, and the building has been rebuilt and repaired many times. The present structure was designed by E. H. Shellard between 1853 and 1855 and is considered his major work. Later additions were made by the Lancaster architect E. G. Paley, including the font, reredos, and organ case. The church was renamed Minster Church of Saint John in 2003 when Preston gained city status. Inside, the church features a nave and chancel with hammerbeam roofs and quatrefoil piers. The west gallery, altar, and regimental chapel are notable fittings. Stained-glass windows include works by Brian Clarke, William Wailes, and Shrigley and Hunt. The tower houses twelve bells, eight of which came from Holy Trinity, Bolton, in 1997. The churchyard gates, dating from about 1855, are also listed. The building blends Decorated Gothic style with later Victorian and 20th-century additions.
