Schloss Inkofen

Schloss Inkofen stands in the village of Inkofen, part of the market town of Schierling in Bavaria. It is a protected historic building with medieval roots and later additions from the 16th and 17th centuries. The four-winged structure with pitched roofs dates largely from around 1650, though parts of the core are older. The building is surrounded on three sides by a park and sits west of the parish church. Archaeologists have found traces of earlier buildings beneath the present structure. The castle’s owners changed many times over the centuries. The Moshamer family held it for nearly a century until 1537. Later it passed to Sebastian Kolb, Michael Grießmayr, and Mathäus Bittlmayer, who left it to Mallersdorf Abbey in 1660. The abbey kept the estate until the secularisation. Today the former Hofmarkschloss remains in private hands. Visitors approach the two-storey building through the park on its west side. The west wall carries old gravestones from the 15th to 19th centuries. Inside the courtyard, the layout still matches Michael Wening’s 1721 engraving. The church of St Jakobus the Elder stands just east of the castle, linking the site to its long religious history.
