Mudam

The Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art stands on the Kirchberg plateau in southern Luxembourg. It occupies the site of the old Fort Thüngen, a former military stronghold. The building was designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect I. M. Pei. The museum opened to the public in 2006 after years of planning and construction. It is dedicated to Grand Duke Jean, who inaugurated the museum on its first day. The site is close to several European Union institutions. The museum holds a permanent collection of contemporary art with works by over one hundred artists. Names like Andy Warhol, Bruce Nauman, and Cindy Sherman appear in its holdings. In its first year it welcomed more than 115,000 visitors under director Marie-Claude Beaud. The Mudam Boutique sells art books, postcards, and design objects. The café serves gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan dishes. Visitors find three floors of galleries arranged around the old fort’s remains. The collections include pieces by Alvar Aalto, Nan Goldin, and Thomas Struth. Temporary exhibitions have featured artists such as Grayson Perry and Jeff Wall. The museum also hosts talks, workshops, and film screenings. Outside, the Dräi Eechelen Park offers views across the plateau.
