Sights in Esteríbar

Esteríbar lies in the Basque part of Navarre and stretches as a Pyrenean valley along the River Arga. The municipality consists of several districts, some of which are no longer inhabited. The main settlement is Zubiri, located centrally in the valley, while larger places such as Eugui in the upper valley section and Larrasoaña and Urdaniz lie downstream. Some places like Olloqui near Pamplona have seen a growing population due to new buildings.

The valley has long served as an important route between France and the Iberian Peninsula. The Celts already used this path, followed later by the Roman road from Astorga to Bordeaux. In the Middle Ages the route became part of the Way of St James, bringing the valley pilgrim hostels and hospices in the 12th century. Esteríbar was first mentioned in 1066 in a donation to the monastery of Leyre. Until the administrative reform in the 19th century, Aquerreta was the main settlement before Zubiri took over this role. Larrasoaña remained independent until 1928, while Eugui was shaped by a historic munitions factory and later by magnesite mining.

Today the scattered districts with their own administrations shape the appearance, while some such as Belzunegui are already abandoned. The landscape was permanently altered by magnesite mining and the reservoir near Eugui. The proximity to Pamplona also makes the valley attractive for new buildings, while traditional places like Larrasoaña stand out for their medieval history.
