Sights in Cheb

Cheb lies in the far west of the Czech Republic, where the Ohře River shapes the landscape. The town belongs to the Karlovy Vary Region and is part of the historical Egerland, which once extended into Germany. It borders German territory to the north and southwest, while to the east and south lie further Czech towns. The surrounding area is marked by volcanic elevations such as the Kammerbühl and the Eisenbühl, among the youngest volcanoes in Bohemia. Two nearby reservoirs offer opportunities for water sports.

The settlement was first mentioned in the year 1061 as Egire and later developed into an important imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire. In the Middle Ages, Cheb was a centre for trade and politics, as seen in the Golden Bull of Eger or the Eger Treaty, which established borders. The town experienced wars, fires and expulsions, including the assassination of Wallenstein and the expulsion of the Jewish community. For a long time, its economy relied on trade and crafts until industry moved in.

Today, Cheb is known for its historic town centre with a medieval atmosphere and the distinctive town coat of arms, which recalls its imperial city past. The nearby volcanic hills attract visitors, as do the two reservoirs. The town bridges Czech and German history and stands as a place between two cultures.
