Eastleigh Museum

Eastleigh Museum stood in the Hampshire town of Eastleigh, a place shaped by the London and South Western Railway from 1884. The building opened in October 1986 to tell the story of how the railway turned a small settlement into a growing community. Exhibits focused on the arrival of the railway and its impact on everyday life. The main display followed Mr and Mrs Brown, a railway engineer and his wife, in their 1930s living room. Temporary exhibitions and hands-on activities brought the past to life for visitors. A small shop and café provided places to rest during a visit. The museum’s displays showed how the railway engineer’s family lived and worked in the 1930s. Interactive games and changing exhibitions kept the experience fresh for repeat visitors. Hampshire Cultural Trust took over the museum in 2014 as part of a wider transfer of local collections. The Browns’ recreated home gave a personal view of life in the railway town. Visitors could explore how the railway changed Eastleigh from a quiet spot into a busy community. The building itself had once been part of the town’s railway heritage. After the museum closed in March 2022, the site was sold in October 2025. The Browns’ living room remained the most memorable feature of the displays. Temporary shows highlighted different aspects of local history and culture. The shop sold souvenirs and the café offered light refreshments during opening hours.
