St Bees Priory

St Bees Priory stands in the village of St Bees on the Cumbrian coast. It began as a pre-Norman religious site linked to St Bega, an Irish princess who fled Viking raids in the 9th century. A Benedictine priory was founded here between 1120 and 1135 by William Meschin, with Archbishop Thurstan of York overseeing its dedication. The priory once controlled a vast parish stretching from Whitehaven to the River Ehen, making it the principal religious centre in western Cumbria. Its influence is still visible in the many medieval grave slabs of local nobility found within the church. The priory was dissolved in 1539, but its nave and tower survived as the parish church. The priory’s history includes periods of prosperity and decline. By the 14th and 15th centuries, it had grown into a large monastic complex with domestic buildings and a thriving community. The monks were involved in early coal mining near Whitehaven and ran a mill in the village. However, raids by Scottish forces in 1315 damaged the priory, and by the time of the Dissolution, parts of the building had fallen into ruin. After the Dissolution, the nave became the parish church, while the monastic chancel was later repurposed for St Bees Theological College, which trained over 2,600 clergy before closing in 1895. Today, the priory remains an active parish church and a Grade I listed building. The 19th-century restoration by William Butterfield gave the tower its Romanesque spire and installed a new organ in 1899. Inside, visitors find the original medieval fabric alongside later additions, including stained glass and the grand Willis organ. The churchyard contains a 10th-century cross shaft with Viking influence, a reminder of the site’s ancient past. The surrounding village retains its historic charm, with the priory standing as a quiet witness to centuries of faith and change.
