Traisenberg
The Traisenberg rises in the Traisen valleys of southern Lower Austria. Its broad massif dominates the landscape and controls the flow of many headwater streams. Over thirty square kilometres in size, it is almost entirely surrounded by the two main Traisen valleys and their tributaries. The mountain is best known for the Zdarsky-Hütte at 1,082 metres on the St Aegyder Bürgeralpe. Run by the Naturfreunde, the hut lies east of the summit and serves as the main tourist access point. The upper slopes are mostly wooded, with rocky outcrops and cliffs near the ridge and summit. Few forest tracks and occasional footpaths see little traffic, keeping the streams in the upper Traisen valleys among Austria’s cleanest. Five named summits form the Traisenberg crest, the highest being the Enzian at 1,230 metres. The Karnermauer, Burgmauer and Stieglmauer stand nearby, while the Sonnkogel completes the line to the northeast. Beyond lie higher peaks such as the Türnitzer Höger and Tirolerkogel, the Gippel and the Göller, all framing the massif’s quiet, forested flanks.
