Mwnt Bryn Castell

Mwnt Bryn Castell stands on a low hill above Bagillt in Flintshire. It is a simple earth-and-stone mound without the usual defensive wall called a bailey. Most such mounds in Wales were raised between the late eleventh and the late twelfth centuries, often surrounded by a ditch. The Normans brought this style of fortification from France and Welsh lords adopted it. Cadw recognises the site and lists it as SAM FL061. The largest group of these mounds anywhere in Britain lies along the old borderlands, including Shropshire, Cheshire, Herefordshire, Powys and Flintshire. Visitors find a grassy mound set among farmland with wide views over the Dee estuary. The ditch that once ringed the mound is still faintly visible. There are no buildings or fences on the mound itself, only a single wooden post marking the scheduled area. The quiet lanes around Bagillt lead straight to the site, making it easy to reach.
