Devonshire Park Theatre

The Devonshire Park Theatre is a Victorian playhouse in Eastbourne, a seaside town on the coast of East Sussex. Henry Currey drew the plans in 1884 and Frank Matcham enlarged and refined the auditorium in 1903. The cream-and-red brick façade still carries its original ironwork balconies and tall arched windows. Inside, the horseshoe gallery wraps around a starlit ceiling painted with clouds and constellations. The theatre was recognised for its special interest in 1981 when it became a Grade II listed building. It is worth the journey because the auditorium remains one of Matcham’s most complete surviving designs. The seating holds 936 people, yet the space feels intimate rather than vast. The stage itself is wide enough for full-scale opera and dance productions. Regular programmes include West End transfers, orchestral concerts and comedy nights. The theatre also hosts the annual Eastbourne Festival, drawing performers and audiences from across southern England. A visitor finds a cream-and-red exterior with ornate iron balconies above the entrance. Inside, the starlit ceiling glows above the horseshoe gallery and plush red seats. The stage is framed by a deep proscenium arch and flanked by tall boxes. The auditorium’s gentle slope gives every seat a clear view of the action. The foyers retain their original mosaic floors and polished mahogany fittings.
