McDiarmid Park

McDiarmid Park stands on the western edge of Perth, a modern all-seater stadium surrounded by farmland once owned by a local farmer. It has been the permanent home of St Johnstone Football Club since 1989, replacing the older Muirton Park which had fallen into disrepair. The ground was built on sixteen acres donated by Bruce McDiarmid, who refused payment and took a small shareholding instead. Percy Johnson-Marshall designed the stadium and Miller Construction completed it in time for the 1989–90 season. The first match saw St Johnstone beat Clydebank 2–1 in a quiet league fixture before a bigger crowd arrived for the official opening against Manchester United. The stadium has hosted important football and rugby events beyond regular league games. It has staged the Scottish Challenge Cup final nine times and welcomed full international teams, including Scotland’s 100–8 victory over Japan in 2004. Rugby’s Caledonia Reds played home matches here before their merger, and Scotland A regularly used the ground for fixtures against Italy, Argentina and Samoa. The Main Stand houses conference rooms and padded seats for season-ticket holders, while the Ormond Stand includes the club shop and once served as a family area. Four covered single-tier stands ring the pitch, each of similar height except the taller Main Stand on the west side. A digital scoreboard was installed in 2024 in the north-east corner, and the floodlights came from the old Muirton Park. Visiting supporters are accommodated in the North Stand or a segregated section of the Main Stand depending on numbers. The synthetic pitch beside the ground doubles as the team’s training ground, and parking for up to 1,100 vehicles surrounds the stadium.
